Ode to the Swiss tunnel.

Down the canyon we drive through on a regular basis, workers are busy (and have been busy for years now) carving tunnels to extend the motorway.

And if you're wondering how the Swiss get around their mountains, the answer is they don't! They go straight through solid rock.

The winding road we take now will be replaced by a fast lane...

and the deep ravines will fall calm and silent as they were thousands of years ago.

If you're asking yourself how I took this picture, think "hanging out the window while hubby sped at 50 miles an hour down a two-lane road with no shoulder." See how devoted I am to this blog?

:)

you are brave! I only once tried to drive in such mountains and it was a distaster - a lot of drivers annoyed behind me why I am so slow and I had a huge fear in my eyes:)Now I am always passive which means that I usually prefer not to look at the road, not mentioning taking pictures:)

I love going through tunnels like those. It seems like some of the Southeastern states like West Virginia have those. Looks like some pretty solid rocks there. Thanks for "risking" your life to get these pictures to us.

Brave! .... Or crazy. ;) We have a little town about 45 minutes from here where the train tracks just go through mountains too. It's funny when you see a long train with it's head out one hole and it's end out the other.

Your pictures are great! Remarkable how the Swiss can carve long tunnels right through the solid rock.

Reminds me of the tunnels they've carved through the Black Hills in South Dakota. Some of them are only one lane and you have to "honk" your horn before you proceed so you don't crash into oncoming traffic.

Be careful taking those photos! :)
